Zimbabwe March Report
Rutendo Precious Mudzamiri
ZimbabweGALERIECONVERSATION
A launch function was organised to introduce the project to potential sponsors and participants. This function took place on the 24th of March at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare.

It was an evening event commencing at 17.30 and ended at 1900 hours. Invitations were sent out to various organisations around the city. The turn out was pleasing, with just over a hundred guests attending the event.

Starting off the evening was a local dance group who performed whilst guests found their seats and mingled. Iyara Mathasia-Guzha; one of Zimbabwe’s leading actresses, officially opened the event. The guest of honour was Helen Lieros, a prominent female artist who has done extensive work in developing the talent of other painters and sculptors through the atelier she has run for many years. She is also the founder of Gallery Delta, a gallery in Harare, which is committed to giving a platform to young artists of promise.

Rutendo Mudzamiri, (Project coordinator, Zimbabwe) spoke passionately about Imagining Ourselves, the global mission and the objectives and aspirations of the local initiative. She introduced the team- Judith Stewart (Film maker), Nontsikelelo Mutiti (Visual artist), Hope (Musician and Fashion designer), and Sabina (Fashion designer) and Fungai Mungoshi one of Zimbabwe's young top TV personalities.

The Imagining Ourselves team would like to thank the US Embassy in Harare (Public Affairs Section) for sponsoring technical equipment, The Cuban Embassy for donating refreshments, HIVOS for sponsoring the event and other project activities, and Zimbabwe International Film Festival Trust for agreeing to be a mentor organisation for the project.

To date through Imagining Ourselves, we have managed to bring together women from different walks of life and talents to discuss issues that affect women through these social gatherings. Most excitingly, we have amazingly managed to get various, powerful women organisations to support this cause in Harare i.e. Zimbabwe Women Writers and Zim International Film Festival, ZTV Newsnet, Zimbabwe College of Music, National Gallery in Harare and Bulawayo, where the 4th bigger gathering will be held on the 3rd of June. Institutes in Harare and Bulawayo are also on board and our target is women artists between 30 - 40. Most of the women actively involved between 30 - 40 are international renowned artists like the traditional mbira player, Chiwoniso Maraire to mention a few.
