IDEA Empowers Women with Leprosy
IDEA is an international human rights, advocacy, and educational non-profit, founded and led primarily by individuals who have been affected by leprosy. Look at their Oral History Project on their web site, to learn about the challenges people continue to face, although there is a cure for the disease. Support IDEA's Global Campaign to Eliminate the Stigma Associated with Leprosy, through our grass roots efforts in Africa, Asia, the United States and Latin America.
AIDS: The Largest Global Emergency for Girls
Help the World YWCA reduce the rate of HIV infections among young women and girls.
STATISTICS:
According to a 2006 study published in New York, obesity is associated with an 18% reduction in women's wages, a 25% reduction in women's family income, and a 16% reduction in women's probability of marriage
Beyond Stereotypes, a 2005 study commissioned by Dove, surveyed 3,300 girls and women between the ages of 15 and 64 in 10 countries. They found that 90% of all women aged 15 to 64 worldwide want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance, with body weight ranking the highest.
Beauty Without Falseness
Yvonne Muinde
KenyaGALLERYCONVERSATION
In the painting Beauty Without Falseness, the little girl comes from a country where makeup, designer dresses, wigs and two-hour makeovers could never compare to the true and natural beauty that she displays in her humble home.

Every morning we wake up and look in the mirror. The woman in the painting, Reaching for a Perception, is reaching for a mask made of preconceived perceptions that have become her reality. But the viewer is forced to ask herself: Which one is the reflection and which one is the reality?

In a world where people stereotype and fear a woman's cultural right to veil her beauty, the young woman in Unveiling  is going to show us that with or without her veil, she is living out in the open while certain political powers hide behind the veil of fear and ignorance.

I often paint people of color. I paint what moves me to paint, because I believe that there is a message to be told and that painting is my best and most urgent medium.

Oftentimes, I am labeled "black painter Yvonne Muinde." I hope that one day people will judge my art for its own beauty and the controversy of its content and not for the skin color of my subjects. Or my own skin color, for that matter.
