TAKE ACTION
Participate in GWANC’s Global Maternal, Infant and Child Health Campaign!
At the end of 2007, the Global Women’s Action Network for Children will launch a large global campaign to dramatically raise public awareness about the tragedy of preventable maternal and infant mortality. Sign up now to be part of it and to lend your voice to this urgent cause.
Just the Facts
If your friends knew how many women died each year from preventable complications of childbirth, they’d be shocked—and they’d want to do something about it. Download our top ten facts on this issue and send it to them in an email!
STATISTICS:
Monetary and education contributions of the Rockefeller Foundation to Mexico in the 1920s radically transformed childbirth and maternal/infant health care.
In Iraq, years of war and economic sanctions have contributed to a decline in maternal health and more pregnant women entering the workforce; in turn, an increase in premature, low birth weight babies, and infant mortality has been registered.
Mother's Milk
Bettina Salomon
AustriaGALLERYCONVERSATION
Being a mother has given me a completely different focus for my life. This first phase of my son’s life has narrowed my actions and daily activities to a bare minimum. It might sound incredibly boring, but my life has never been richer.

At first I regretted all the social activities I had to miss, and I felt frustrated that I couldn’t devote as much time to my work. But my son has taught me to be more light-hearted, playful, and, most importantly, to live in the present moment and interact with him and not worry so much about the future and all the things I want to do but can’t.

Being a single mum is teaching me to balance the conflicting demands of work and childcare. I’ve discovered a newfound capacity for being patient that I never knew I had. Before I became a mother, I had no idea I would be able to tolerate or cope with the sleep disruptions and still be happy in the morning. I didn’t know that I would be able to go through life without being able to finish conversations, a train of thought, or a cup of tea because my child is around and needs my attention. I never thought I would love motherhood so much.

***

“Mother’s Milk,” by Bettina Salomon, is a very intimate visual diary during the time of her first pregnancy and the first year with her son. The photos show the bodily changes as much as the emotional ups and downs that you experience during this very precious time. Bettina Salomon is model and photographer in one. Every photo series happens quite spontaneous and expresses a strong emotion. The viewing and editing of the work is another step of working through the experiences of this time. “Mother’s Milk” holds about 100 images. There are a limited number of 50 books, personally signed by the artist available for purchase.
