IndiaGALLERYCONVERSATION
I think easily accessible information, with the coming of the internet, satellite television, and Hollywood, has been the most...
Indian society was and is largely a conservative one, where women are meant to look after the home and the children while the men provided material resources. Although this is still true to a large extent today, the difference in modern Indian society is that today there are far more work opportunities for women.
In my generation, I think the only challenge that women face which is different from their male counterparts in the workplace is the possibility of being abused or harassed sexually; but this is true all over the world.
In today’s digital age, an individual can be entertained and occupied without coming into direct contact with the world around him or having to interact with other individuals. With cyber sex, chat rooms and so on, even the most natural process which unites men and women has a completely different meaning. And to me this is a very scary scenario, maybe a bit extreme but one sees it happening all around us.
I am not necessarily advocating change, instead I am putting forward a scenario which I think needs to be looked at. The internet has changed our lives, so quickly and so drastically. In spite of the fact that we are more in touch with what is going on around the world, it is easier to keep in touch with people, and there are forums for discussion and debate, these interactions remain virtual. The internet is an environment in which we are extremely comfortable.
