Armenian Lullaby

Armenian Lullaby is a video based on the poem by my great-great-grandfather Rafael Patkanian (1830-1892) about a mother singing a lullaby to her child. She calls on different birds associated with various professions.
In my interpretation I focus on mothers who have been raising sons only to see them go to wars in the height of their best years. While the song has always been considered patriotic, saying that there is no better profession for a son than to be a soldier, to me, as a mother of a 15 year old boy, this is a mourning song. I believe we have to claim this traditionally male territory to provide a new perspective and shift focus from action to reflection.
